Do you apply enough sunscreen?

Enjoy the sun the safest way

There is nothing nicer than a hot sunny day and while it is tempting to go out in the lovely sunshine and to soak up some rays there are also some risks. Looking after your skin in the sun is key and will prevent you from getting painful sunburn. Make sure you are prepared and look after your skin when you go outdoors, but still get the benefits of being in the sun in a safe way.  You have already learned that between 11am and 3pm is when the sun is likely to be at its strongest and that you can burn even when it is cloudy. A good sunscreen will have a high sun protection (SPF) and the higher the number the better. Any above 15 is good and if you have fairer skin you'll need to find something stronger, while having a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) and ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) is best.

How do you apply your sunscreen?

Surprisingly most of you don't apply enough sunscreen. As a guide, adults should aim to apply around two teaspoons of sunscreen if you're just covering your head, arms and neck, while if you want to cover your entire body while wearing a swimming costume you'll need to apply 2 tablespoons worth. If you apply it too thinly the amount of protection it will give you will be less. If you are worried you may not be applying enough try a higher factor sunscreen to be safe.
To avoid burning make sure you apply your screen 30 minutes before you go out, then again just before you do go out and should be applied liberally to any exposed skin including your face, neck and ears. If you have thinning or no hair remember to put some on your head too. A wide brimmed hat is good as it will offer extra protection to your face and head.

Swimming and sunscreen

Whatever you may think water or seawater will wash your sunscreen off even if the product claims to be water resistant. The cooling effect of the water could also make you think you're not getting burned and because water reflects ultraviolet (UV) rays it increases your exposure. Water-resistant sunscreen is still best if you sweat a lot or have contact with water even so water resistant or not any sunscreen should be reapplied straight after you've been in water and after towel drying, sweating, or when it may have rubbed off. If you are not sure, just apply some more sunscreen and play it safe. It is better to apply more and avoid getting burnt rather than to hope nothing happens and getting caught out.

How to chose a good sunscreen

Get the best out of the good weather

There are so many good things about being in the sunshine because it helps your body to produce vitamin D, so it probably gets confusing for you when you are told to cover up when you are out in the sun. Sunburn can be really painful and increases your risk of skin cancer if you don't look after your skin the right way. When you go outside always make sure you are prepared and look after your skin, but still get the benefits of being in the sun in a safe way. You have already learned that between 11am and 3pm is when the sun is likely to be at its strongest and that you can burn even when it is cloudy.

How to choose a good sunscreen

There are lots of sunscreens out there in different formats. But remember keeping yourself covered up during the hottest time of day will help to protect your skin more. This doesn't mean you have to cover up all day, but keep in the shade when the sun is at its hottest.
When you choose your sunscreen look for a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to protect against UVB and at least a four-star UVA protection.
Remember don't spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen and that the fairer your skin is the higher the SPF you use should be.

What are the SPF and star ratings about?

There is no need to feel daunted by this, but it is good to get this right. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measure of the amount of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) protection. SPF indicates the level of protection offered
with anything that is 50+ offering the strongest form of UVB protection.
The star rating measures the amount of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) protection and should be at least a four star UVA protection. You should see a star rating of up to five stars on UK sunscreens with the higher the star rating, the better. The letters "UVA" inside a circle is a European marking. This means the UVA protection is at least one third of the SPF value and meets EU recommendations.
Sunscreens that offer both UVA and UVB protection are sometimes called broad spectrum. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years, but once opened they also have an expiration date, which will be indicated on the tube by a tub with a number in it. So 6M means you should stop using the product 6 months after you have opened it.

Keep yourself safe in the sun

Are you keeping your skin safe when out in the sunshine?

It is good to go out in the sun as there are lots of positive benefits from being in the sunshine and it may get confusing when you are told to cover up when out in the sun as well. Whatever you do when you go outside it is always good to consider protecting your skin because it is easy to think that the sun won't hurt you, but a growing number of people ignore good advice, end up getting sunburn and this can be really painful.  I was particularly reminded of this by an article in a national newspaper about a mother that went abroad with her family and faithfully put factor 50 sunscreen on her young sons throughout the day, but they still got very badly burnt.  A close family member had a cancerous mole on her leg and now has to be very vigilant when out in the sun.  So when you go outside always make sure you are prepared and look after your skin, but still get the benefits of being in the sun in a safe way.

Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer and doesn't just happen when you're on holiday; you can burn even when it is cloudy.

Be skin safe

Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March to October. Avoid burning and cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses during times of the day when your skin will be more vulnerable to burning. Be extra vigilant with children and use at least factor 15 sunscreen

Who smiles more?

Smiling and Laughter can be among the most uplifting things that you do and when you go into work on a Monday how do you feel? Do you go into your office with a smile on your face or are you glum? In fact the average person doesn't smile until 11.16am on a Monday, but the benefits of smiling are more than making you or someone else's day better. Smiling can boost your mood and even your immune system.

I have already said in previous blogs how smiling can make you appear more attractive, sociable and confident and these are things that will help progress you in your business or career. Your smile can also be recognised from up to 300 feet away and 69% of people find women more attractive when they smile. You can smile up to 19 different ways. A smile means the same thing in different cultures and you can't help but smile when someone smiles at you. Smiling boosts your mood, makes you feel a lot better and helps keep you healthy. Smiling can help you beat stress.

Women smile more than men?

It's true, but when men and women participate in similar work or social roles they tend to smile the same amount. So whatever you do, try and smile more because it will make the work or role you are in much nicer for you and those around you.

I'm Melanie and I was stuck in a job I hated working with men and women that had no respect or compassion. It almost drove me to suicide particularly after a vicious male colleague subjected me to a very personal and hurtful verbal attack about my skin (I'm a psoriasis sufferer) and the supervisor did nothing about it or to offer any support. If you have ever been in that sort of a situation you may understand how hard it can be. Starting my own business made me stronger and a part of my business are the DoTERRA oils that I love. They help in so many ways, mentally, physically and give a great deal of pleasure. Today is wear no make up day and DoTerra is all about being natural. So celebrate who you are and remember there is an oil out there with your name on because you'll find yourself drawn to the scents that will most benefit you both physically and mentally.
