How to diet and keep the weight off for good. Day 3

How are you going to tackle that New Year Diet?

Did you know that the average person gains 11 pounds for every diet they go on? Were you aware also that the weight you regain is all fat? Now fat burns less calories than muscle so you actually end up with a slower metabolism than when you first started your diet. To maintain your weight when you have more fat on your body, you'll need even less calories than before. It's a vicious circle and it is why many people cannot understand how they are getting larger, but eating less. If you are a serial dieter, whose weight is constantly fluctuating then you need to carefully consider how you are going to lose the excess weight, keep it off for good and to get your metabolism back up and working for you. The rise in obesity and diabetes means that now really is the time to start looking after you and your body.

New Year, New You

With the New Year you may be considering losing some weight after the indulgences of the festive season and it is a great time to start. You'll be motivated and ready to take on the challenge. But there are two key things you need to do differently this time to make this diet your last. The first thing is to reduce your appetite without starving yourself and fix your hormones and brain chemistry that drive your hunger and eating. Secondly you need to increase your metabolism to make sure you burn more calories by increasing you muscle mass because muscle burns more calories than fat.

Understanding the right things to do and how to avoid the wrong things that jeopardise your weight loss will help you to lose weight effectively and keep the weight off.

Have a plan and a goal

There is a saying about poor preparation producing poor results and that is true of almost anything. If you set your goal too high or make it unrealistic you'll soon get disheartened and give up. The same goes that if you don't plan ahead then you'll be more likely to fail as well. Keep a food and exercise diary and plan what food and meals you are having.

If you go shopping without a list you're the chances are you'll pick up your normal staple foods without thinking, you'll more than you need and you'll succumb more to naughty treats, special offers and anything else that takes your eye and your fancy. Sound familiar? If you plan your diet on what you are going to eat and stick to it you'll be less likely to go off course and you'll shop a lot smarter.
If you have the right ingredients to make the meals that will benefit you the most you'll achieve your aim much easier then if you are going through your cupboards because you can't decide what to have. If you ever shop when you feel a bit peckish then that may be a good reason why you are filling up with sweets and snacks that you don't need. Avoid having foods in the house that are unhealthy and don't use the excuse that it is for the kids or the grandkids. If you are giving your family unhealthy food now you are setting them up for unhealthy eating habits later.
Always sit down at a table to eat your meals and turn the TV off or leave your desk at work and go somewhere else. It may surprise you that you are more likely to eat more than you actually need if you are distracted and you'll also less likely to register in your mind that you have had a meal. Even if it is a snack, sit at a table and take time to eat consciously. You'll be a lot more aware of what you have eaten and you'll eat more slowly as well. Use a portion control plate if you are not sure what amounts to have. You can get these easily on line.

If you are going out for a meal with friends or family, see if there is a menu online so you can check it out and work out what the best option is for you to have. Can you ask for some simple changes? Green salad instead of fries for instance? Can you make some meals in advance and freeze them, to free up your time during the week when you are more busy? Join a group of like minded people so you can support and encourage each other. Some people find a weekly weigh in helps to motivate them to lose weight. Some people factor in a cheat day where they save up some calories during the week so they can have a treat at the weekend.
