Discovering Copaiba

Copaiba

Did you know the copaiba tree can grow to more than 100 feet tall? You will find them in the Amazon rainforest and the collection of the oleoresin is tapped from the tress in a manner similar to that used to get syrup from a maple tree. The oleoresin is then steam distilled to produce Copaiba essential oil.

I have been discovering the real benefits of this beautiful oil and something that may surprise you is the way copaiba works in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has a role in managing many modern and prevalent concerns, including mood, inflammation, appetite, and relaxation. This biological system, composed of receptors, cannabinoids, and enzymes, is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system and acts as a regulator for countless physiological processes.

Unlike cannabis plants, copaiba is high in a phytocannabinoid called beta-caryophyllene (BCP) which has the ability to bind directly to CB2 receptors to affect the ECS. This means unlike cannabis, which has THC it does not affect your brain. This makes it very exciting because it means there are no unwanted side affects and the product you use is purer also.

Research is still in early stages, but the benefits of copaiba are wide reaching.

How to Use Copaiba Oil

  • For clear skin and to reduce the appearance of blemishes use Copaiba oil on your skin.  Add Copaiba essential oil to your toner and apply to your face in upward circular motions. Or, apply it directly your skin before applying moisturizer
  •  Copaiba can be used to create your very own fragrance and will blend well with oils such as Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, or Ylang Ylang. Use in a roller bottle with some Fractionated Coconut Oil to increase the efficacy of your personal blend.
  • Taking Copaiba essential oil internally can support the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and immune system. South Americans have used copaiba resin for the health of many of these same systems.
  • Add one to two drops of Copaiba oil to water, juice, or make your own tea using warm water and honey.
  • If you feel anxious use Copaiba oil to feel calmer. If you’re facing a stressful day or feel worried, the woody scent of Copaiba oil can help calm any anxious feelings you may be experiencing.
  • Use Copaiba essential oil to protect and support your cells. Take one to two drops of Copaiba essential oil in a veggie capsule to take advantage of the antioxidants—the substance that stops potential damage to your cells from oxidation.
  • Diffuse Copaiba oil to help you unwind and focus on the scent to fall into a meditative state.
  • For a calming bath, use Copaiba oil by adding two to three drops to body wash before mixing it in the water.

The Chemistry of Copaiba Essential Oil

Copaiba oil's main chemical component is beta-caryophyllene, a chemical similar to cannabinoids found in cannabis that may protect nerve cells and have benefits for the cardiovascular and immune systems. However, while caryophyllene is responsible for some of the bioactive properties of Copaiba oil, many of the other properties of the oil are thanks to the diterpenes uniquely found in Copaiba oil.
