The benefits of Coriander Essential Oil

How to use and enjoy Coriander Essential Oil.

Did you know Coriander comes from the same plant that produces Cilantro essential oil? Coriander oil is unique because it can be used internally to promote digestion, aromatically for relaxation, topically for clear skin, and more besides.

You may be familiar with using coriander in your kitchen, but it has benefits beyond the realm of cooking giving it lots of everyday uses.

Chemistry of Coriander Oil

Main Chemical Components: Linalool, α-pinene, γ-terpinene, camphor

Linalool, a monoterpene alcohol known for its toning properties.
Ingesting linalool may be good for healthy brain function and improve learning, memory, and overall cognitive health.
Linalool may also contribute to the relaxation of blood vessels, which is helpful when the body is at rest.

Looking for an alternative to Lavender? Try Coriander.

Lavender is the most chemically similar essential oil to Coriander—these two oils share several of the same chemical constituents, which means they share many of the same benefits. If you are out of Lavender, you can find similar soothing benefits from Coriander oil for skin, body, and relaxation.

Oils that blend well with Coriander oil

With a green, herbaceous aroma, Coriander is known for blending well with minty, fresh essential oils like Peppermint or Wintergreen oil because it produces a fresh, clean scent.

Details about the oils are on my dōTERRA website

Are you getting enough Fruit and Veg in your diet?

How much fruit and veg do you need in a day?

Most people accept that you should be consuming at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables in your day. However, did you know potatoes, yam, cassava and plantain do not count as one of your 5 a day because they are nutritionally classified as a starchy food. Your other forms of starch in your diet come from things such as bread, rice or pasta.

How do you know what a portion is?

For fruit the rule is this.

5 A Day vegetable portions

Small-sized fresh fruit

To get a portion of small fruit it can be anything from 2+ items of the fruit that you need to consume. For instance a portion could be either 2 plums, 2 satsumas, 2 kiwi fruit, 3 apricots, 6 lychees, 7 strawberries or 14 cherries.

Medium-sized fresh fruit

Depending on size a portion could be 1 piece of fruit, such as 1 apple, banana, pear, orange or nectarine.
However a large banana, or pear for instance would count as more.

Large fresh fruit

Again size matters, but as a rule a portion could be half a grapefruit, 1 slice of papaya, 1 slice of melon (5cm slice), 1 large slice of pineapple or 2 slices of mango (5cm slices).

Dried fruit

This is a lot easier to measure because a portion of dried fruit is around 30g. This is about 1 heaped tablespoon of raisins, currants or sultanas, 1 tablespoon of mixed fruit, 2 figs, 3 prunes or 1 handful of dried banana chips.

Remember dried fruit can be high in sugar and can be bad for your teeth. If you can swap dried fruit for fresh fruit, especially between meals.

To reduce the risk of tooth decay, dried fruit is best enjoyed as part of a meal – as dessert, for example, not as a between meal snack.

Tinned or canned fruit

A portion is roughly the same quantity of fruit that you would eat for a fresh portion, such as 2 pear or peach halves, 6 apricot halves or 8 segments of tinned grapefruit.

Fruit canned in natural juice is healthier than fruit canned in syrup.

5 A Day vegetable portions

Green vegetables

A portion would be 2 broccoli spears or 4 heaped tablespoons of cooked kale, spinach, spring greens or green beans.

Cooked vegetables

A portion is 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked vegetables, such as carrots, peas or sweetcorn, or 8 cauliflower florets.

Salad vegetables

A portion is 1.5 full-length celery sticks, a 5cm piece of cucumber, 1 medium tomato or 7 cherry tomatoes. A portion of lettuce is around a desert bowl.

Tinned and frozen vegetables

It is about the same quantity as you would eat for a fresh portion. For example, 3 heaped tablespoons of tinned or frozen carrots, peas or sweetcorn count as 1 portion each.

With tinned vegetables choose those canned in water with no added salt or sugar.

Pulses and beans

A portion is 3 heaped tablespoons of baked beans, haricot beans, kidney beans, cannellini beans, butter beans or chickpeas.

No matter now many beans and pulses you consume, they still count as a maximum of 1 portion a day.

Maybe you find it a bit of a hassle getting in all your fruit and veg in one day. Wouldn't it be nice if there was something easy out there to help you do this? A good solution I have found to help is to use

TerraGreens

One of the most universal nutritional issues is that people simply do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1 out of every 3 adults eats the recommended amount of fruit per day and over 70 percent do not meet guidelines for vegetable consumption.

Perhaps you don't have the time to prepare meals, don't like the taste, or find it can be costly or wasteful when you have to throw uneaten produce away.

It is generally agreed though that you need enough fruits and vegetables for optimal health.

How polyphenols can help with aches and pains

What are Polyphenols?

With over 8000 types of Polyphenols, which can be further broken down into 4 main groups, namely Flavonoids, Phenolic acids, Polyphenolic amides and other polyphenols. They offer various health benefits and can act as antioxidants to help you be more healthy. They are also thought to reduce inflammation.

Polyphenols occur in foods such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, tea, dark chocolate and even wine although the amount found will depend on the food type, how it is grown, farmed, ripeness, stored, transported and prepared.

Benefits of Polyphenols

There are numerous benefits from polyphenols. They may help protect against cancer particularly if you have a diet rich in plant based foods because of their antioxidant and anti inflammatory effects.

By promoting the growth of good gut bacteria they could help with healthy digestion. If you want to lower your blood sugar levels and the risk of having type two diabetes, polyphenols may help the breakdown of starch into simple sugars.

The antioxidant qualities of polyphenols are good for your heart, but also could help lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels. Polyphenols may even reduce the risk of blood clots that cause things such as strokes, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolisms. Finally polyphenols can help with your brain health to boost your focus and memory.

Discovering Copaiba

Copaiba

Did you know the copaiba tree can grow to more than 100 feet tall? You will find them in the Amazon rainforest and the collection of the oleoresin is tapped from the tress in a manner similar to that used to get syrup from a maple tree. The oleoresin is then steam distilled to produce Copaiba essential oil.

I have been discovering the real benefits of this beautiful oil and something that may surprise you is the way copaiba works in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has a role in managing many modern and prevalent concerns, including mood, inflammation, appetite, and relaxation. This biological system, composed of receptors, cannabinoids, and enzymes, is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system and acts as a regulator for countless physiological processes.

Unlike cannabis plants, copaiba is high in a phytocannabinoid called beta-caryophyllene (BCP) which has the ability to bind directly to CB2 receptors to affect the ECS. This means unlike cannabis, which has THC it does not affect your brain. This makes it very exciting because it means there are no unwanted side affects and the product you use is purer also.

Research is still in early stages, but the benefits of copaiba are wide reaching.

How to Use Copaiba Oil

  • For clear skin and to reduce the appearance of blemishes use Copaiba oil on your skin.  Add Copaiba essential oil to your toner and apply to your face in upward circular motions. Or, apply it directly your skin before applying moisturizer
  •  Copaiba can be used to create your very own fragrance and will blend well with oils such as Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, or Ylang Ylang. Use in a roller bottle with some Fractionated Coconut Oil to increase the efficacy of your personal blend.
  • Taking Copaiba essential oil internally can support the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and immune system. South Americans have used copaiba resin for the health of many of these same systems.
  • Add one to two drops of Copaiba oil to water, juice, or make your own tea using warm water and honey.
  • If you feel anxious use Copaiba oil to feel calmer. If you’re facing a stressful day or feel worried, the woody scent of Copaiba oil can help calm any anxious feelings you may be experiencing.
  • Use Copaiba essential oil to protect and support your cells. Take one to two drops of Copaiba essential oil in a veggie capsule to take advantage of the antioxidants—the substance that stops potential damage to your cells from oxidation.
  • Diffuse Copaiba oil to help you unwind and focus on the scent to fall into a meditative state.
  • For a calming bath, use Copaiba oil by adding two to three drops to body wash before mixing it in the water.

The Chemistry of Copaiba Essential Oil

Copaiba oil's main chemical component is beta-caryophyllene, a chemical similar to cannabinoids found in cannabis that may protect nerve cells and have benefits for the cardiovascular and immune systems. However, while caryophyllene is responsible for some of the bioactive properties of Copaiba oil, many of the other properties of the oil are thanks to the diterpenes uniquely found in Copaiba oil.
