Have you grown up believing that by being good, working hard and with a bit of talent you would be recognised and rewarded for it?
Many women do and while we are more visible in the workplace and are making the workplace a better and more productive place, it is the men that continue to get promoted more quickly and paid more. A sore point at the BBC at the moment when the salaries of male and female presenters was finally released to show that the women gave better value than their male colleagues by doing more work, but were paid woefully less. And the BBC claims to be an equal opportunities employer! To further rub salt in the wound some of these males arrogantly defended why they were worth more!
Why is this happening?
For those of us that do, having children will significantly change any parental priority and none more so than women who have more emotional ties. Cultural and institutional barriers may also play a role
The biggest factor however may well be women and more importantly their confidence. Have you ever felt that you were not good enough, clever enough, worthy enough, entitled, bold enough to do certain things? I know this applies to me. Do you balk at doing things that men would probably take for granted? Starting and growing my own business highlights to me over and over how uncomfortable I am doing many things that men would just do.
Have you ever heard a successful woman saying she didn't deserve something whether it was a promotion or success in her life or to run a project as she didn't think she was the best person to do it? Have you ever put your successes and failures even down to luck, being in the right/wrong place, or with the right/wrong people? Do you find yourself being the quiet one around men because they are so much louder and sound more assured? Men it seems are much more confident than women.
