Do you struggle to lose weight? Here's why. Day 3

How is that diet coming along?

Did you know that the average person gains 11 pounds for every diet they go on? Were you aware also that the weight you regain is all fat? Now fat burns less calories than muscle so you actually end up with a slower metabolism than when you first started your diet. To maintain your weight when you have more fat on your body, you'll need even less calories than before. It's a vicious circle and it is why many people cannot understand how they are getting larger, but eating less. If you are a serial dieter, whose weight is constantly fluctuating then you need to carefully consider how you are going to lose the excess weight, keep it off for good and to get your metabolism back up and working for you. The rise in obesity and diabetes means that now really is the time to start looking after you and your body.

New Year, New You?

With the New Year you may have considered losing some weight after the indulgences of the festive season and it is a great time to start. You probably felt motivated and ready to take on the challenge, but moving on a bit and things have stagnated and you're struggling or have given up.

There are two key things you need to do differently this time to make this diet your last. The first thing is to reduce your appetite without starving yourself and fix your hormones and brain chemistry that drive your hunger and eating. Secondly you need to increase your metabolism to make sure you burn more calories by increasing you muscle mass because muscle burns more calories than fat.

Understanding the right things to do and how to avoid the wrong things that jeopardise your weight loss will help you to lose weight effectively and keep the weight off.

Learn to control your appetite

You think you can control your appetite right? You think that come the afternoon when that boredom sets in or those afternoon hunger pangs start that you'll have the willpower and self control to avoid raiding the snack? Because most diets involve eating less they are more likely to trigger hunger. You ever had that when you feel hungry and that is all you can think about? It's a powerful and emotive feeling and as your hunger increases so do your cravings and your metabolism slows to conserve energy while low fat, higher carb and sugary foods will make your more hungry and also slow your metabolism.

Learn to eat the right foods at the right time and eat enough to satisfy your appetite and make sure that your food balances your blood sugar to lower your insulin. Choose nuts, seeds, chicken, fish, grass fed meats and fibre rich fruits and vegetables, like carrots, green peas, apples, grapefruit, and watermelon. Use Whole-grain breads like barley, pumpernickel, and whole wheat and beans Kidney, garbanzo, pinto, soy, and black beans, but don't go mad. Cereals with 100% bran. Remember fat, protein and fibre will slow insulin spikes and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Always have a protein rich breakfast as this gets your metabolism working and and avoid eating 3 hours before going to bed. This is because when you sleep your body slows down and burns less energy.
