Cover up the right way during the hottest part of the day

Enjoy the sun the safest way

If you are having fun in the sun then you'll there is no fun in getting painful and damaging sunburn.  Keeping yourself prepared and looking after your skin when you go outdoors will help you to reap the benefits of being in the sun in a safe way. You have already learned that between 11am and 3pm is when the sun is likely to be at its strongest and that you can burn even when it is cloudy. A good sunscreen will have a high sun protection (SPF) and the higher the number the better. Any above 15 is good and if you have fairer skin you'll need to find something stronger, while having a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) and ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) is best. Sunscreen is best applied before you go out into the sun, applied liberally throughout the day and especially after you have been in any water.

Look after your children in the sun

Babies and children have skin that is much more sensitive than adult skin, and damage caused by repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life.
Children aged under six months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight and definitely shouldn't have their skin directly exposed to the sun rays. Like adults children should be kept covered up with suitable clothing, kept in the shade especially between 11am to 3pm and have a sunscreen of at the very least an SPF of 30

Cover up the right way in the sun

While it is hot it is tempting to wear less, but you need to consider clothes and sunglasses that provide sun protection particularly during the hottest parts of the day. Try wearing a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears, a loose long-sleeved top, trousers or long skirts in close-weave fabrics that don't allow sunlight through and sunglasses with wraparound lenses or wide arms with the CE Mark and European Standard EN 1836:2005

Do you need to be extra vigilant when in the sun?

If you have pale, white or light brown skin you will need to take extra care when in the sun. If you have or are prone to freckles or have red or fair hair and tend to burn rather than tan, then be careful. If you suffer from any skin problems relating to a medical condition make sure you protect your skin. If you're not used to intense sun or are in a hot country where the sun is particularly intense, then keep out of direct sun particularly during the hottest parts of the day. Finally if you have a history of skin cancer in your family make sure you take steps to protect your skin properly.
If you spend a lot of time in the sun, whether it's for work or play, you are at increased risk of skin cancer if you're not taking the right precautions.
If you are naturally brown or have black skin you are less likely to get skin cancer, as your darker skin has some protection against UV rays, but skin cancer can still occur so make sure you still look after yourself when out in the sun.

Protect your moles

When you have lots of moles or freckles, your risk of getting skin cancer is higher than average. It is important not to get caught out by sunburn, utilise any shade, clothing and a sunscreens with higher SPF levels or at the very least of an SPF of 30. Keep an eye out for changes to your skin including any new moles, growths or lumps or any moles, freckles or patches of skin that change in size, shape or colour.
Report these to your doctor as soon as immediately because skin cancer is much easier to treat when found early.
