Does perfume give you a headache?

Are scents making you feel bad?

Did you know how many synthetic scents and perfumes are out there and how many of these toxic ingredients are finding their way into your favourite scents, not to mention the everyday products you love to use in and around your home? Do you get lots of headaches for no apparent reason? Do you feel rundown and low of mood for no reason? Your health may be suffering due to toxic overload from all the scented products that you use on yourself and in and around your home. If you love scent, then no doubt you'll use it in a big way, but even if you don't consider yourself a 'scenty' person, scent will still be a big part of your life whether you realise it or not. Aside from perfume and the like, you may have all or some of these types of products. Scented beauty products such as shampoo, shower gel, plug in diffusers, reed diffusers, scented candles or aerosol sprays designed to make you feel better, happier, sleep more, stay awake longer or to make your home look and smell better. There is some type of scented product for just about every room in your home. When you go out the chances are you will be subjected to an onslaught of synthetic and toxic scents. Even my bank has got into the act! Maybe you've ditched the cigarettes to try vaping and e-cigarettes instead and these come interesting and on trend flavours (all synthetic). When you get up in the morning until you go to bed, your day will have involved the use of scent in some shape or form from what you used to clean yourself with to what is used to keep your clothes clean and fresh smelling, the products to clean your dishes, floors and home. Did you ever take a cheeky sniff of a product before buying it to see if you liked the smell? With an increasing number of respiratory and health issues there has to be a cause and it isn't all down to the environment. Those very products you love and use each day could also be contributing to that. If the inside of your nose has ever felt sore or itchy for no reason, if you have ever felt excessively tired or run down for no real reason or if you get headaches, aches and pains for no real reason it may be because of the products you use. And part of the ingredients in many of those products will involve scent. With a big price tag on its value the perfume industry is huge. You love scent more than you know!

But did you know you can improve your health by ditching the perfume and finding natural alternatives? When did you last look at the ingredients in your perfume? If you didn't catch my previous blogs on perfume then go and find them. You would have learned that ingredients such as Benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and linalool, commonly found in most perfumes can lead to respiratory issues, while Ethyl acetate may put you at risk of kidney or liver damage. It has cancer-causing ingredients, including benzyl acetate, limonene and methylene chloride, while the Acetone and benzyl alcohol are linked to disturbances in the central nervous system. Some perfume chemicals have been linked to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Many chemicals in perfumes are linked to pain. Benzyl aldehyde is linked to abdominal pain while benzyl alcohol and methylene chloride are linked to headache pain. Benzyl alcohol and ethanol are known to cause muscle twitching and lack of coordination. Methylene chloride is documented to cause irritability. Let's see what else may be in there that is affecting your health.
