How your feet can benefit from Epsom salts

Have a Foot Soak

Giving your feet a good soak is a great way to relieve tension and to help you relax. You can use warm water, but if it is a really hot day cold water is a good idea as it will help you to cool down. Giving your feet a good soak is a great time to exfoliate too by giving them a good rub after soaking. Always finish with a good foot cream to massage and moisturise your feet. Sometimes, you just need to take time to sit down, relax and unwind. Here are some foot soaking tips that you can try.

Immersing your feet in a tub of warm water, even without anything extra in it, is a nice way to relax after a long day. A foot soak soothes your muscles, hydrates your skin and can relieve aches and pains due to standing for hours or walking in uncomfortable shoes. Plus, letting your feet sit in their own bath can help reduce swelling and prevent bacteria from settling into blisters and cuts or under toe nails.

And while a little rough skin helps protect our feet, if you’re prone to developing thick calluses, softening them in a soak makes them easier to exfoliate—precisely the reason why most pedicures begin by submerging your feet into warm water.

Have you tried an Epsom Salt Foot Soak?

Epsom Salt foot bath

Epsom salt contains magnesium and sulfate and is a compound that can help flush toxins and heavy metals from your skin’s cells, reduce inflammation, increase circulation and ease muscle cramps and joint pain.

As your feet absorb the magnesium, pain-reducing ions are released, relaxing your muscles and nerves and helping them function properly by regulating your electrolyte levels. The sulfate targets any harmful substances that need to be eliminated from your body. Epsom salt can also get rid of bad food odours, help heal fungus or ingrown nails, and soothe dry skin.
You’ll find this healing salt at most drug stores and pharmacies. In a standard size foot tub, dissolve one cup of Epsom salt in warm water and soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes.

Does your Friday ever turn out to be a drag?

Do you want that Friday Feeling?

You know it can be a bit of a downer on your weekend when you have to go to work and well, work isn't all that exciting. All you are doing is looking at the time and finding yourself bothered by how slowly things are going. It may be you just can't get motivated, your brain has switched off and it's been a really long and stressful week. You just want the weekend to finally start so you can unwind and do what you want to do.

To be fair a bad day can happen any day of the week, but let's get you through your Friday and make it more of a Friyay! If you look at your working week there may well be ups and downs, but the main thing is to look at the bigger picture of what you have achieved. Too often people focus on the here now instead of stepping back. You may have had a really productive week and not realised it! And remember if you look after a team of people if you look at the bigger picture then easing up every now and then may actually help productivity in the long term.

Clear your head

You know I have talked about walking before because there are lots of benefits to getting some fresh air, moving around and taking in a change of environment. Even 5 minutes makes all the difference. Take the time to switch off from what you are doing so that you can refocus when you return to your desk. Walk up the road, round the block, to another part of the building, just move and download and see how much better you feel.

Do you want a simple and fun way to reinvigorate your Friday?
DoTerra oils are totally natural and non toxic. Anything that has citrus in it will be uplifting, while things like Peppermint and Lavender help to lift your mood. Don't know where to start? How to deal with a blood blister

Have you ever had a blister?

It happens when your footwear rubs the skin and before you know it that area of your foot it nasty and red. It can happens when you do more walking or running than usual, wearing new footwear or even footwear that doesn't suit your foot type can cause you problems. If you can always try to apply a plaster before it becomes a big nasty and painful blister, but if you do get caught out and can't do anything about it then there are some things you should do to prevent making the situation worse.
You have already heard about Friction Blisters in yesterday's blog and will have learned that keeping your blister in tact is best and covering with a suitable plaster or dressing helps to. Lavender oil can also be applied to the blister to help calm and soothe the skin and help with the healing process. You have also learned that if your blister has burst then the best thing is to leave it alone as much as possible, keep it clean and apply a clean dressing if necessary.

Blood blisters

Like normal blisters, blood blisters should be left to heal naturally. A blood blister occurs when a normal blister has filled with blood and should be treated like a normal blister. If a blood blister bursts, keep the area clean and dry. Protect it with a sterile dressing to prevent infection if need be.
Again you can also put a drop of Lavender oil on the blister throughout the day as needed.  This oil has antiseptic qualities and is also soothing and calming for the skin.

Blood blisters can be painful. Applying an ice pack to the affected area immediately after the injury for 10 to 30 minutes can help relieve the pain (a bag of frozen vegetables works just as well). Don't apply ice directly to your skin though, place a towel over the area before applying an ice pack.

Treating blisters

Most blisters heal naturally and don't require medical attention.
As new skin grows underneath the blister, your body slowly reabsorbs the fluid in the blister and the skin on top will dry and peel off.
When to seek medical help
See your GP if you have blisters that:
  • you think are infected – an infected blister will be filled with yellow or green pus and may be painful, red and hot
  • are very painful
  • keep coming back
  • are in unusual places, such as on your eyelids or inside your mouth
  • are caused by severe sunburn, burns or scalds or an allergic reaction
Try to carry some plasters with you and blister plasters are fantastic as they give that extra bit of padding.  If you have a pair of shoes or sandals that feel like they might rub then put a plaster on before you go out as a precaution. No blisters really are better than any blister no matter how small! Remember doing something to stop a blister happening has to be better than the pain of the blister itself.

Burst blisters

It is very tempting to pull off the dead skin from a blister that has burst, but try to resist the temptation as the skin underneath may be quite raw. Instead allow the fluid inside to drain and wash it with mild soap and water. Keep the area dry and clean and if necessary cover the blister and the area around it with a dry, sterile dressing to protect it from infection until it heals.
Hydrocolloid dressings, available over the counter from pharmacies, have been shown to help prevent discomfort and encourage healing.
If the top layer of dead skin from a burst blister has already rubbed off, don't pick at the edges of the remaining skin. You can also put a drop of Lavender oil on the blister throughout the day as needed.  This oil has antiseptic qualities and is also soothing and calming for the skin. Remember the advice below on how to protect it from infection.

How to deal with a friction blister

Have you ever had a blister?

However, should you be caught out here are some tips and advice that might help.

Friction blisters

The unbroken skin over a blister provides a natural barrier to infection. It's important that the skin remains intact to avoid infection.
As tempting as it may be, try not to pierce a blister with a needle because it could lead to an infection or slow down the healing process. Allow the skin to peel off on its own after the skin beneath has healed.
You may choose to cover small blisters with a plaster. Larger blisters can be covered with a gauze pad or dressing that can be taped in place.
Painful blisters, or those in positions where they're likely to burst, such as on the sole of your foot, can be covered with a soft dressing to cushion and protect them. It may help to cut the dressing into a 'doughnut' shape to fit around the blister and avoid placing pressure directly on it.
Change the dressing daily and wash your hands before touching the blister to avoid infection.
You can also put a drop of Lavender oil on the blister throughout the day as needed.  This oil has antiseptic qualities and is also soothing and calming for the skin.
