Here are some tips on how to keep your nails looking good. It is important to keep your finger and toenails in tip top condition. For those of you that do not like having a glossy looking varnish on their nails there are now matt base-coats and the like that you can buy that look very natural on the nail.
To keep your fingernails and toenails looking their best:
- Keep nails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria from growing under your nails. Repeated or prolonged contact with water can contribute to split fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals.
- Practice good nail hygiene. Use a sharp manicure scissors or clippers. Trim your nails straight across (then round the tips in a gentle curve for your fingernails, but for your toenails use a file to gently take away any rough edges on the side and leave the nail straight).
- Use moisturizer. When you use hand lotion, rub the lotion into your nails and cuticles, too.
- Apply a protective layer. Applying a nail hardener might help strengthen nails.
- Ask your doctor about biotin. Some research suggests that the nutritional supplement biotin might help strengthen weak or brittle fingernails.
