Do you ever get anxiety?
You may not realise it, but you may have experienced anxiety before and before you start to worry it is a natural response and experienced by people throughout the world. Anxiety is actually a natural feeling of fear or apprehension about the future. It may surprise you to know that around 40 million people in the United States are affected by many different anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, social anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. Globally there may be about 1 in 27 people suffer from an anxiety disorder.More people are reporting feelings of anxiety than ever before and there may be reasons for this that are connected to the environment that you live in or the lifestyle choices that you make.
Are you bombarded with information through media?
More fluid lifestyles mean that you can obtain information from just about anywhere and at any time of the day. If you have a smart phone you can have news updates, and exposure to social media 24/7. Is keeping up with all this news and information causing you stress? A lot of the news you see today has a negative bias, which can increase your feelings of worry and anxiety about personal concerns that aren't even related to the news. The world feels like it is becomes less safer and the news you see about people being attacked, riots, wars, famine and extreme weather only add to this. But how do you unwind? Do you love a horror movie or playing an intense and realistic video game? The thing is the subject matter of these is negative and plays on your feelings of fear. And what about the programs you watch on TV? What about your social media? What kinds of people or groups do you follow on there? Are you reading negative posts all the time? Even if it feels like it is harmless fun, putting people down, watching people and animals being maimed or hurt may begin to affect you in the long term. You may say that people are more hungry than ever for the real thing, but if it is leaving you feeling more tense, anxious or angry even then it is going to start having a negative effect. Even if you think you find it funny, there may be some underlying fears that you are trying to suppress or ignore.
What can you do about this? Well if you are feeding yourself with negative information then you are going to give out negative information. Try a media fast and switch yourself off from it. Stop those news or social media updates if it helps. Stop following people or groups that give out negative or derogatory information about others. Start following more positive things instead. Like and share what is nice and not what is bad or harmful to others. And finally if you can't find something nice to say or share then don't say or share anything at all.
If you find that anxiety is taking over your life and making some positive changes isn't really helping then seek out some help and advice from your doctor.
