Do you ever get anxiety?
Anxiety happens to us all and is a natural response creating a feeling of fear or apprehension about the future. In the United States alone that are around 40 million people suffering from some form of anxiety, while throughout the world there may be about 1 in 27 people suffering from an anxiety disorder.More people are reporting feelings of anxiety than ever before and there may be reasons for this that are connected to the environment that you live in or the lifestyle choices that you make.
Richer countries have more anxiety
It may really surprise you to learn that living in a country that is wealthier could be contributing to your feelings of anxiety. In fact you are 3x more likely to suffer from some sort of anxiety in a wealthier country, which suggests it may be linked to a modern Western lifestyle.
My previous blog talked about media and how you are exposed to information and news on a 24/7 basis, but not just that how you use media to relax may also be affecting you, whether that is through the games you play, the films you watch or your favourite tv programs. Everything has an effect on you. What about your social media? Are you looking at, commenting on and sharing negative things on there? Maybe people living in less affluent countries are more supportive of each other and rely less on social media and the news for human interaction. It could be that in more wealthy countries you feel more pressured to be a 'success' and that you compare yourself more to other people.
Try and be less hard on yourself and to appreciate more what you do have and what you have achieved. Remember very successful people have often put a lot of hard work and hours to get to where they are now. You may just see the end result. Your happy place may be a very different one to the next person. Someone I know said that a man he mentored was perfectly content to have a business where he worked a few days a week, had enough money to cover his mortgage and bills on a very modest house and to go to the pub on a Friday for a pint with his mate. Your happy place doesn't have to be big, flamboyant or extravagant, it just needs to be big enough to fulfil your needs.
If you find that anxiety is taking over your life and making some positive changes isn't really helping then seek out some help and advice from your doctor.
