Walking well is down to your feet

Are you walking properly?

If you want to maximise the walks you are taking then you will want to look at your posture and make sure you are taking steps the right way. This will be healthier for you and mean you are less likely to injure yourself when you are out and about. You will have learned in my previous blogs about the importance of looking where you are going and holding your head the right way, while keeping your shoulders rolled back and down will make you look and feel more confident. Walking tall and holding your belly in also helps you to keep your hips aligned so they are neither too far forward or too far back. Swinging your arms from the shoulders and taking confident strides that are not too long is best also.

Wear good shoes and use your feet correctly

From heel strike to toe off there is a lot of action taking place in your feet. On normal terrain, the transference of weight goes from your heel, through your foot to the ball of your foot and goes across there to your big toe where toe off takes place. Basically you should allow the weight to transfer through your foot, there should not be any shuffling or sliding of your feet, neither should your foot come to the ground in one big go; nor should you be walking predominately on the balls of your feet for instance. Any footwear should be appropriate to the task in hand and if you are walking should offer adequate support and protection.
